Dear Families, I hope you all had a wonderful week! In Room 101 we finished up some unfinished work and prepared ourselves and classroom for the break. This week has been a fun filled week and I am proud of all students work and efforts in the classroom! Students went into the Makerspace on Thursday and Mrs. Wolff allowed us to explore with different technology tools that are available to us! This is something we can continue to earn!
In reading, we wrapped up our Historical Fiction book club books and students were given a post assessment. This assessment tested them on their reading skills and the strategies they learned during book clubs. Students also continued working on their vocabulary book's with their groups and will be presenting them after vacation!
In science, we began talking about soil layers, different types of soil, and what type is the best for planting. When students return from winter break we will do a soil experiment and take a look at loam, sand, and clay and make observations of their physical properties.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday with family and friends and have an amazing vacation!! I will see students back on Thursday, January 2, 2020! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Week of December 9, 2019
Dear Families, I hope you have all had a great week! We had a great one in Room 101, I can't believe we are a week away from winter break! On Monday during our morning meeting we discussed how we can show kindness during the holiday season. Students then wrote on a light bulb ways they can show kindness and we hung them up on our bulletin board!
In reading, we began a new historical fiction read aloud called Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan. This book takes a different perspective on WWII and students are really enjoying the book, especially since the main character is a 10 year old boy. As we read students make notes about the plot and characters in their reading response journals, using the reading strategies we have been learning during Reader's Workshop. After winter break we will start up new book club groups and students will dive into nonfiction texts!
In science, we continued talking about food webs and had our ecosystem vocabulary quiz. This should have been taken home last night and signed by someone at home. Yesterday, we did a Mystery Science and discussed the question, "why did dinosaurs go extinct?" We used our knowledge of food webs and food chains to discuss what may have happened.
In writing, we continued working on our second personal narrative but this time thinking about the heart of our story. In our first narrative we discussed the heart of our story as the main event and the part of our story that we slow down and stretch out. Now we are thinking about the heart of our story being the theme or the message we want to get across to our readers. This is helping students think about our stories in a whole other way. It is very hard to find our own theme but students are persevering and really digging deep into their story!
Congratulations to Saanvi Jegan for being one of Fisher School's winner for the Dedham Savings holiday card contest!! So proud!!
Some notes for next week:
- Students have earned their whole class reward of a holiday movie! We will watch the movie next Thursday, the 19th, in the morning. You may send in a special holiday snack for students to enjoy while watching their movie.
- We will also have our holiday celebration next Thursday. It will be with the entire grade 5 in the auditorium and students will participate in holiday games/activities.
- Next Friday, the 20th, is our Battle of the Books competition. If students participated in the battle please make sure they wear their team shirts to school that day!! We will start the day off with a team breakfast in the cafeteria.
- There will be NO spelling test next week.

Week of December 2, 2019
Dear Families, I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday and the first snow day! During our morning meeting on Monday students were excited to share what they did over the Thanksgiving break and the food that they ate! I can't believe we are only 2 weeks away from our Christmas break!
This past week in writing we started a new personal narrative. We began by discussing ways and strategies writers use to generate ideas. We also took a look at published narrative texts and analyzed the strategies the authors used. Students worked with their writing partner to come up with a new seed idea, story tell it then begin time-lining. Some students have already began drafting! My hope is that students will finish their second personal narrative story before the holiday break.
In science, we continued to discuss ecosystems, what lives in an ecosystem, food chains, and food webs. Ask students how we can use a mammal's feet, eyes, or teeth to distinguish what type of consumer they are! We will have our ecosystem vocabulary quiz next Wednesday the 11th! Students should already have all the words and definitions filled out.
In reading, we have been working on some RACE open responses and responding to our book club books. Students are doing a really nice job using the graphic organizers they created while reading the chapters and using them towards answering the questions. Next week, we will begin a new whole class read aloud that is based on WWII. We will go back to the reading strategies we have been using and then students will use these strategies in their own independent reading books. Students are also working on a vocabulary project with their book club groups! Students were responsible for specific vocabulary words in each chapter and they had to complete a vocabulary 4-square (definition, picture, synonym, sentence). Students are now taking these 4-squares and turning them into a book using Book Creator!
Just a reminder that next Friday, the 13th is a half day! Enjoy your weekend!

Week of November 18 and 25th
Dear Families, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Last week in Grade 5 we had a special science activity on Wednesday. Students met with a group of SIEMENS workers in the Makerspace and discussed the topic of physical science. Students worked in groups to experiment with different materials and discuss the physical and chemical changes of the objects. It was a great hands-on activity for all! I will share photos in a separate post.
In reading, students read diligently in their book club books and had discussions on the characters in the story character traits. Students also compared and contrasted how the characters in their story handled the challenges they faced. Students will be finishing their books today in reading and will have their final book club meeting tomorrow to discuss the book as a whole and determine a theme for the story!
In writing, we did a couple of RACE open responses based on the characters in our books. I am really starting to see students grow as writers! We also read a Time For Kids magazine and within the magazine there was an article on donating old cellphones to help with deforestation. Students then filled out a graphic organizer where they had to prove or persuade a classmate to donate their old cellphone. Students used the magazine and the Internet to prove their reasons. We will continue working on these this week!
There is no spelling test this week due to the short week. I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday weekend!

Week of November 4th and 11th
Dear Families, I hope everyone is doing well! I can't believe the holiday's are fast approaching! The past two weeks have been busy in Room 101. Last week we celebrated Friendship Week and last Wednesday was World Kindness Day. We got together with our first grade buddies and listened to a story called the The Kindness Quilt by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Students then discussed what kindness was to them and drew a picture on a sticky-note to create our own kindness quilt! A picture of our work is shown below. Students were such great role models for their first grade buddies and really helped their buddy think about different ways they can be kind. SO proud of all!
In writing we celebrated our work with personal narratives and did a gallery walk so everyone could get the opportunity to read their classmates stories. After reading a someone's story, we gave the writer one compliment and one goal for their next story. Once our gallery walk was completed students looked through all their compliments and goals, and created some goals for their next personal narrative. I hope all families were able to read their child's final draft of their personal narrative! If not, please let me know and I will send home another copy with your child.
In science, we wrapped up our plant unit and students had their test this past Friday. This week we will dive into our Ecosystems unit and discuss the movement of matter in ecosystems and how producers, consumers, decomposers play an important role in our environment.
In reading, we are about halfway through with our book club groups! Students are really enjoying their books and having thoughtful, "ping-pong," discussions. My hope is that we will finish our books before Thanksgiving break!

Week of October 28, 2019
I hope everyone has had a nice week! Thank you to all who came in for a conference. Students were excited to hear that they were doing well.
In writing, we are starting to finish up our personal narratives. Students will be coming home with their published stories next week! This week we focused on the editing process and discussed how to peer edit. Students did a wonderful job helping their classmates edit and were giving them thoughtful suggestions. I am excited to see the progress students made from their benchmarks to their published writing.
In reading, we continued with our books clubs and had some more thoughtful discussions on our books. This week our focus was on plot and recognizing the actions characters take to solve the main problem. We also learned about the RACE strategy and how we use this strategy to respond to texts. We did a shared write with our mentor text, The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco. It is a wonderful picture book to teach about WWII.
In science we talked about two different types of plants, angiosperms and gymnosperms and discussed how one reproduces. We will begin our soil unit next week and learn about they different types of soil!
Have a great weekend!

Week of October 21, 2019
I hope everyone is having a great weekend! It was so nice meeting with some parents last week during conferences, I look forward to meeting with the rest of you Tuesday night. The past couple of weeks students have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum.
In writing, students have been working hard on their personal narratives and will soon be publishing their final pieces. I have already seen much improvement in student's writing. This week we will be focusing on editing our grammar and spelling and will be doing some peer editing.
In reading, we introduced our very first book clubs and began reading our books. Some will be reading The Bicycle Spy by Yona Zeldis McDonough and others will be reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Students have learned how to have a "ping pong" conversation within their groups and have been successfully keeping the line of conversation alive. This week we will be focusing on how we respond to books using a strategy called RACE. Ask students what it stands for!
In science, we wrapped up our unit on photosynthesis and how plants make their own food. This week we will focus on how plants and flowers reproduce, as well as completing a fun Halloween science experiment!
On Thursday October 31st, grade 5 will be having a Halloween dance after lunch in the auditorium! Students have the option to BRING their costumes to school and wear it for the dance only. Students will then change out of their costumes after the dance and will put it in their backpack to be brought home. Please reach out if you have any further questions!
*Please note that I will begin posting the week's spelling words on my blog after students receive the words on Monday's. If students forget their words at school then the words can be found here for students to study!

Week of October 7, 2019
I hope everyone had a great week and are enjoying their long weekend! It is so good to finally see the sun, and I'm sure the kids are happy to get outside!
This past week in Literacy we finished up our first unit of stories, ending with the story Ten Mile Day. We discussed the challenges immigrants faced and had a discussion on family members who are/were immigrants. The first unit of stories helped me to get to know students as readers and writers, and helped prepare us for our next unit! This week I will be introducing Book Clubs to students. I will be grouping students into four different groups and each will have a trade book they are responsible for reading, discussing, and responding to. We will start off with Historical Fiction books, and the era will take place during World War II. I am excited to launch our very first book clubs and I know students are too!
In writing we have been continuing to draft our narrative stories. This past week we focused on elaborating our main events using slow motion action, character dialogue, sensory details, and descriptive words. I am so impressed with our writing and cannot wait to start publishing them!
Just to note, please make sure students are studying for spelling tests throughout the week! It is important to encourage them to study a little bit each night to help promote effective study skills. I assign spelling words every Monday and spelling tests are every Friday, unless there is a 1/2 day then tests are on Thursday's.
Just a reminder to sign up for Parent-Teacher Conferences through Sign Up Genius! The link is on Fisher School's homepage. Conference time slots are limited to meeting with homeroom teachers only. We simply do not have enough time to meet with all of our math, science, and social studies student's parents within the conference window. However, all fifth grade teachers will give me detailed notes on your child's progress that I will be sharing with you!
Thank you and have a great rest of your long weekend!

Week of September 30, 2019
Dear Families, I hope you all had a wonderful week! This past week was a busy one. Students were introduced to their Battle of the Books teams and coaches. For the students that are doing Battle of the Books they should have brought home a t shirt form to fill out. Please send it back with your child as soon as you can! I am thrilled with all of the participants for the battle this year!
In science, we wrapped up our living things unit and had our first science quiz of the year. I was thrilled with everyone's success! It really showed that all student's put in the effort to study. I will be giving back these quizzes today and they need to be signed by a parent/guardian over the weekend. We started our plant unit on Wednesday and our big unit question is "How do plants eat/make their food?"
In writing, we have finally come out of our writer's notebook and began drafting our first narrative story. We chose the story we were most passionate about and will be revising and editing this piece for the next couple of weeks so we can publish our first story! Next week we will be focusing on our main event in the story and learning how to stretch it out like a movie scene by scene.
*Mark your calendar:

Week of September 23, 2019
Hello Families, I hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather! I want to thank you all for coming to our Open House last Tuesday. It was so nice meeting you all. The students were really looking forward to showing you around and displaying all the hard work they have been doing for the first month of 5th grade!
Last week in reading we completed our first full Reader's Workshop. We read the story Strega Nona, and discussed situations of cause/effect in the story. Students then went back to their seats with their independent reading book and found cause/effect examples in their own book. I met with groups and we discussed which strategies we used to find cause/effect (was it inferred or explicitly stated in the text?).
We will be having our first science quiz tomorrow, the 1st! Students have their study guides to use for studying and their own flashcards that we made during class time. I also gave students a link to my Quizlet account where they can use the flashcards I have created. The URL for my account is www.quizlet.com/kgallagher650. You do not need an account to access mine. Just internet!
In writing we have been continuing to work on narrative writing and last week we learned how to organize our ideas. We learned how to timeline our stories and then transfer that to writing. This week we will be coming out of our writer's notebook and choosing one story we want to publish!
Students running for student council will deliver their speeches today and we will vote. I will announce our winners at the end of the day! I hope you all have a wonderful week and please reach out if you have any questions!

The past two weeks have been very, very busy! Students have been working so hard to complete work that will be displayed during Open House. Students have created an All About Me poster, All About Me Google Draw which will be displayed in a slideshow during Open House, and a QR code which will direct you to a recording of students sharing an All About Me poem! Open House is THIS Tuesday, September 24th from 6:00 - 7:30. Students are very excited to share their classrooms with their families!
In science, we began talking about the difference between living and nonliving and how we determine if something is living. Ask your child about MS GREN! We then moved on to discuss the characteristics of living organisms and the cell organization in which an organism is made up of. We will most likely be having our first science quiz at the end of this week, if not early next week!
In reading, we have been talking about our expectations for Reader's Workshop and practiced the different parts of Reader's Workshop. Students learned about a mini lesson, independent reading, Freckle, and what we do in a small group with the teacher. Tomorrow we will focus on partner discussions and what it looks like to have a meaningful "turn and talk" with our reading partner. I am still learning about who we are as readers and I have had some great discussions with students about our independent reading books!
On Friday, students were introduced to the fifth grade student council! For those that are interested in running, they brought home a large piece of paper and this will be used to create their poster. Students must put their names on it, some ideas that they will bring to student council and maybe even a slogan! These posters will be hung up in our homeroom starting on Wednesday. Students are asked to write a short (30 seconds to 1 minute) speech which will be presented to their homeroom. Speeches are due next Friday the 27th for teacher review. Speeches will be given on Monday September 30th and students will vote right after the speeches are given. I encourage all to run!
Please reach out if you have any questions! Have a wonderful Sunday and GO PATS!!

First (almost) Full Week Back!
This past week was spent getting to know one another, diving into our curriculum, and learning new things! All students have worked extremely hard this week and I am proud of all their efforts! We have been working so hard on our All About Me Gazette posters which will be displayed in our classroom for Open House! Please make sure you mark it in your calendars for Tuesday, September 24th.
In writing we started our first writing unit, personal narratives. We started off by learning that good writers use a variety of strategies to come up with ideas to write about. We began by writing in our writer's notebook about a turning point in our life. We then moved on to a special person where students made notes about moments in their life with this special person. On Friday, we thought about a special place that mattered most to us and wrote down moments that happened in this special place. Students then went back to their seats and did a "quick write" where they chose a memory from their special place and wrote a story about it. I was so impressed with everyone's stories! I can already tell we are all great writers!
In reading we began our first story, Red Kayak. In this unit students are thinking about ways people act courageous and brave and what inspires people to do so. We shared ways that we have acted brave or courageous and what inspired us to act this way.
On Wednesday we switched classes for math and met our math teacher! Students were very excited to have the opportunity to go to another classroom!
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend and GO PATS !!

Welcome Back!
Happy first day of school! I was so excited for my new students this morning and for a new year! We had a great day getting to know one another and getting back into our daily routine. We started off our day with our very first morning meeting. Students learned each other's names and everyone shared one thing they wanted their peers to know about them.
As a whole class, we created our own rules and expectations. Every student wrote down one rule or expectation they thought was important to have for a successful school year! These rules and expectations will be signed by students and hung up in our classroom so we can refer back to them all year! I look forward to another great day tomorrow and can't wait to get to know my students even more!
