Week of October 21, 2019

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! It was so nice meeting with some parents last week during conferences, I look forward to meeting with the rest of you Tuesday night. The past couple of weeks students have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum.

In writing, students have been working hard on their personal narratives and will soon be publishing their final pieces. I have already seen much improvement in student's writing. This week we will be focusing on editing our grammar and spelling and will be doing some peer editing.

In reading, we introduced our very first book clubs and began reading our books. Some will be reading The Bicycle Spy by Yona Zeldis McDonough and others will be reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Students have learned how to have a "ping pong" conversation within their groups and have been successfully keeping the line of conversation alive. This week we will be focusing on how we respond to books using a strategy called RACE. Ask students what it stands for!

In science, we wrapped up our unit on photosynthesis and how plants make their own food. This week we will focus on how plants and flowers reproduce, as well as completing a fun Halloween science experiment!

On Thursday October 31st, grade 5 will be having a Halloween dance after lunch in the auditorium! Students have the option to BRING their costumes to school and wear it for the dance only. Students will then change out of their costumes after the dance and will put it in their backpack to be brought home. Please reach out if you have any further questions!

*Please note that I will begin posting the week's spelling words on my blog after students receive the words on Monday's. If students forget their words at school then the words can be found here for students to study!
